Center of Excellence and permanent Cooperations
Center of Excellence for Prospection and Documentation in Archaeology
The Center of Excellence is a cooperative effort with the Mainz College of Applied Sciences. It develops new methods for computer-generated documentation and reconstruction of archaeological finds and discoveries. Through this, methods of archaeological prospection are improved and applied.
In 2002, the largely informal collaboration with the “Institute of Space-Oriented Information and Measurement Technology” (13mainz) of the Mainz College of Applied Sciences was finally institutionalized.
Apart from the measurement projects in China, the following, among other things, have come about through this collaboration: an area model of Chinese imperial graves and the ancient quarry near Mayen, laser-documentation of Roman mines to old Stone Age flint artefacts, computer animations of ancient production techniques of the copper statue of Pharaoh Pepi on display in the Cairo Museum and virtual reconstructions of the Late Roman fortresses near Mayen as well as the formation of the volcanic East Eifel region.
